A stunning modern masterpiece of a home, located in the ultra-luxurious 'island-within-an island,' community of Sentosa Cove, Singapore. This minimalist modern home responds so well to its site context by designing for projected future urban density and the site’s local environment. The home is designed with a thick, nine metre high wall that forms the entrance façade which wraps around to continue along the sides, revealing itself open to a waterway at the back of the home. Belgian architect Vincent Callebaut is renown for taking on issues of urbanity and reframing them with a futuristic - 'utopian-esque' ideal of sustainability. His recent project 'Asian Cairns' takes aim at the constant mass rural exodus to the cities of China. He proposes in these newly over-crowded cities sustainable 'farmscrapers' that produce more energy than they consume via food production, wind harnessing and solar power. The towers in 'Asian Cairns' use biomorphism and bionics to make an architecture that becomes cultivable in the emerging Chinese megalopolis of the Pearl River Delta. The Glass House by Nico Van Der Meulen is located in Johannesburg, South African - its total sq. ft. is 26,900 roughly 2500 sq. m. To say this is excess is a bit of an understatement, this is a modern day versailles - a new sun palace fit for Louis XIV. The house is...yes impressive, but is it a home or a stage set piece? Don't get me wrong, we would move in immediately if given the opportunity - I mean who wouldnt, but the age ole saying "less is more," rings so true when you think of design that has lived through the ages and is still relevant today. In 50 years time do you believe this home will still be as stunning or become Passé at best? Share your thoughts below - do you love it, loathe it, or think i'm completely bonkers - lol.
