Zaha hadid has just launched in the NOVA shoe, a limited edition haute couture footwear, as part of a collaboration with United Nude. The manifestation of a years-long exchange of idea with United Nude creative director Rem D. Koolhaas (not to be confused with his namesake, uncle and Hadid's former employer), the design is both a challenge to preconceived formal limits of shoes as well as a synthesis of materiality, ergonomics and dynamism. Informed by Hadid's characteristic architectural language of sinuous curves and impossible forms, the shoe is a small-scaled structural feat, sporting a cantilevered heel that allows a 6.25 inch heel to appear unsupported. The engineering and fabrication of the shoe appropriates both time-tested and entirely new methods of cobbling what with a combination of lost wax cast techniques, injection molding and vacuum forming to ensure a seamless vessel. The NOVA shoe is the first to employ rotation molding as a viable fabrication technique-- a method by which a softened material is rotated on a perpendicular axis throughout the cooling and curing process. The upper portion of the shoe is part italian leather and metallic chromed rubber, while the hidden heel and platform are fiberglass, ensuring a lightweight object that articulately expresses the dynamic movements of the wearer. the shoe will be available in sizes 35-40 at select stores in l'eclaireur in Paris for a price tag in the £1300 range. a limited edition run of 100 pairs in black, bronze and rose gold have already been created. NOVA shoe by Zaha Hadid for United Nude Straw weaving is a traditional Bahamian art form; locals braid indigenous palm tree leaves creating beautiful baskets, hats, and works of art. Emerging designers are revolutionizing the craft, such as Keesha Miller, an avant-garde straw weaver who lives in Nassau, New Providence. Her line, Keesha's Creations consist of shoes, bags, sandals, belts, stationery items, home accessories, and so much more. I asked Keesha about her work's inspiration, she says it comes from "The art of being a true Bahamian". The islands are full of exotic landscapes, and it's clear she draws upon them in her 'natural couture,' designs. She said she was introduced to this industry by her grandmother who lives in Long Island, Bahamas. She went on to say that she has been in this business since 2000, but learned to straw weave from the age of 8. This young and vibrant lady defies the odds of what can and cannot be made of straw. Her collection has stolen the hearts of Bahamians. Everyone wants to know Keesha and where they can purchase her signature straw weaved items. Her collection is carried by B'Jou Classique on Mount Royal Avenue, Nassau, New Providence. She is indeed a true Bahamian with amazing talent, and I am sure her customers will say the same. I enjoyed my interview with Keesha. She has inspired me to stand out; no matter how many people are doing the same thing, find a way to make it a unique expression of you. There’s something about the 8-bit aesthetic that strikes a chord with everyone of a certain generation, calling to mind those halcyon days when everyone had the same games console and a tablet was something you took for hay fever. Shanghai-based designer Sabine Ducasse has mastered that look in her award-winning Melting Pot collection, which fuses perler beads together into wearable garments that definitely take you back to the future.
Fun, colourful and paradoxically both deliciously retro and bang on trend, Sabine’s designs were created for an East meets West brief which she appears to have smashed out the park, winning her as it did a scholarship to the International Fashion Academy. The Chanel runway in the vast hall of the Grand Palais appeared to have been made from solar panels, and along its considerable length sprouted a forest of towering wind turbines that Karl Lagerfeld called âbeautiful modern architecture.â Karl was clearly looking to the future and to the idea of harnessing technology to fashion, from the fabrics printed, woven, or layered to create the illusion of three-dimensionality, to the playful accessories including the classic Chanel boater reimagined with an enormous brim of clear Lucite, or the new Chanel bag in bright molded plastic. The result of the 2013 Spring Collection was certainly faithful to the late Alexander McQueenâs templatesâthe hourglass silhouette, the romantic crinolines, the uncompromising shoes (which this time were sculpted as hollow Lucite wedges, with golden crystals rattling in the heels). In keeping with Riccardo Tisci's affinity for religious dress and Gothic glamour, this season's Givenchy collection was clean-lined and minimal in terms of embellishments, but refreshingly, there were moments of feminine romance, a result of the designer looking to the house's 1960s archives. New York-based artist and designer Sebastian Errazuriz has created a riff on the iconic and ubiquitous "I Heart NY" design by Milton Glaser in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Submerging the logo in blue dip-dye on a T-shirt for Grey Area, Errazuriz, whose studio was paralyzed by city power outages in the violent storm, was inspired after noticing the devastatingly high flood line on the walls of the Chelsea art galleries. The artist created another shirt that depicts the NYC subway map dip-dyed in black at an angle to artistically and accurately show the city's post-disaster power divide.
One hundred percent of the T-shirts' profits will benefit relief efforts in the area, so get yours now. Despite the overwhelming response in the shirt's short life to date, they're still taking orders online at Grey Area for $40. More pictures after the jump. Woah, our favorites from two different spectrums of design are together! German fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has looked to the iconic toy LEGO to create clutch designs for chanel's spring/summer 2013 collection. The bags were an outcome of lagerfeld's ideology of beach-time fun for the high-end fashion brand, incorporating bright colors and the unmistakable block forms to direct the aesthetic. The creator of this brand, Libor Komosny has always based his designs on technological processes in the manufacturing of his garments. Technology takes place as a very important part with his products, patterns, and workmanship. His collections underline women’s silhouettes and the perception of the female body. He strives to create stunning minimalistic clothing that harken towards a perceived future. The interesting thing about this collection is that it is highly structured and tailored, each garment has an architectural quality. The surreal styling and almost post-apocalyptic photography really reinforce the architectural language that shows fashion is more then just a garment.
